CLINTABS (clindamycin hydrochloride) is available by prescription only. Clindamycin is a narrow spectrum antibiotic used to fight bacterial infections in dogs and cats. Clindamycin raises the white blood cell count to help prevent the spread of bacteria. Clindamycin is especially useful in treating infections in the mouth because it is able to keep infections contained. Clindamycin acts on bacteria by inhibiting the production of proteins, thus stopping the growth of susceptible strains of bacteria.

How it work

Clindamycin fights infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Clindamycin works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Directions:

  • Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. If the diarrhea is watery or has blood in it, call your veterinarian. Do not use any medication to stop the diarrhea unless your veterinarian has told you to do so.
  • Clindamycin is a prescription antibiotic used in the treatment of serious infections such as soft tissue infections, dental infections, and bone infections.
  • Give this medication the entire length of time prescribed by your veterinarian. Symptoms may get better before the infection is fully treated.

Dogs All weights The usual dose for dogs is 2.5-15 mg/lb every 12 hours for a maximum of 28 days
Cats All weights The usual dose for cats is 5-15 mg/lb once every 24 hours

Cautions

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in pets with known hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin. Do not take clindamycin at the same time as erythromycin. Use with caution if your animal is pregnant or nursing. Clindamycin can interact with other medications. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is on any other medications. Use with caution if your pet suffers from kidney disease, skin allergies, asthma, or colitis. Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.

Common side effects of Clindamycin in dogs and cats include nausea and vomiting from gastrointestinal irritation.
