SMZ-TMP (trimethoprim/sulfa) in double strength (DS) form is an antibiotic used to treat susceptible bacterial infections in multiple species. It can also be used to treat certain infections with protozoa.
Sulfamethoxazole is an sulfonamide antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria by blocking the production of folic acid, which is essential in making the bacteria’s DNA. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim are both antibiotics that treat different types of infection caused by bacteria. Trimethoprim works similarly, by blocking the production of folic acid at a different stage in it’s development. By combining these two drugs, there is a heightened chance of killing the bacteria without promoting any resistance by the bacteria.
Cautions: Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Leave plenty of water for your pet to drink. Report any unusual side effects to your veterinarian.
