Product Info:

Azathioprine is an immunosuppressive drug used in dogs and cats. It treats hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, arthritis, immune mediated skin diseases, chronic liver inflammation, inflammatory bowel diseases, certain kidney disorders, and myasthenia gravis. This medication suppresses or slows down the growth of the cells involved in autoimmune diseases.

How it works:

Azathioprine is used to suppress cells involved in autoimmune diseases. Examples of these diseases include Hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, arthritis, skin diseases, chronic liver inflammation, certain kidney diseases, and inflammatory bowel diseases.

How to Use:

Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Azathioprine may be given with food or without food. Do not abruptly stop giving azathioprine. Azathioprine needs to be tapered off over several months according to your veterinarian's directions.

If you forget a dose, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and apply the next one as directed. Do not give a double dose of the medication.

Cautions:

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Use with caution in cats. Do not use in animals with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to azathioprine. Use with extreme caution in pets suffering from hepatic dysfunction. This medication can severely suppress the immune system and reduce the production of blood cells. For that reason, periodic blood tests should be run to monitor blood cells during treatment. Azathioprine may interact with some other medications, so be sure to inform your veterinarian of any and all medications your pet may be taking. In the case of an overdose, seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. Symptoms of an overdose may include vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. Finally, if you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while administering azathioprine, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Side Effects:

Side effects that can occur are related to suppression of bone marrow and can include; anemia, pale gums, weakness, lethargy, bruising or bleeding tendencies, decreased white blood cell counts, increased risk of infection. Signs of infection may include; abnormal breathing, fever, depression, lameness, change in urination, diarrhea. Other side effects that can occur include vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, pancreatitis, jaundice. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.
