Product Info:

Amlodipine besylate is used in cats for the treatment of systemic hypertension (high blood pressure). Although Amlodipine besylate is not FDA-approved for use in veterinary medicine, it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to prescribe this medication for cats.

For:

Cats

Benefits:

  • Treats high blood pressure in cats
  • Relaxes the arterial muscles to help decrease blood pressure

How it works:

Amlodipine treats dogs and cats suffering from various heart conditions including high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It belongs to a general class of drugs known as dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers. Therefore, it effectively blocks calcium channels, reducing the contraction of the heart muscle and dilating the arteries. This medications slows the heart beat, lowering blood pressure and making the heart pump blood more efficiently.

Storage:

Store this product at room temperature.

If you miss giving your cat a dose of Amlodipine, give the next dose as soon as you remember or, if it is close to the next scheduled dose, return to the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Weight range (lbs) Dosage
All weights 0.625mg (1/4 of a 2.5 mg tablet) once a day.

Cautions:

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use in animals with a known hypersensitivity to amlodipine. Use caution when giving this medication to animals suffering from heart failure or low blood pressure. Some animals may become weak upon taking this medication due to lower blood pressure. Blood pressure should be monitored during treatment. Missing a dose of amlodipine can result in a rapid return of hypertension, which could be dangerous. This drug may interact with some other medications. Therefore, inform your veterinarian of any medications your pet may be taking. This is especially important if your pet is currently taking diuretics, other drugs that lower blood pressure, warfarin, or aspirin. Finally, contact your veterinarian if you notice any behavioral or physiological changes in your pet while administering amlodipine.

Side Effects:

Side Effects are rare but may include drowsiness, loss of appetite, weight loss, swelling of the gums, or rapid heart rate. In dogs, may also cause the blood to take longer to clot. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.
